Welcome to Los Angeles Opera’s 30th anniversary season and to your continuing involvement with the Opera League of Los Angeles.
I am grateful to have been elected President of the Opera League, the primary volunteer support group for LA Opera. It goes without saying that the office of the President comes with great responsibility and commitment. I will strive to uphold those high standards that were maintained so impeccably by outgoing President Kathy Crandall. Kathy performed brilliantly and offered a variety of interesting events with her trademark creativity, dedication, and boundless energy. She didn’t just help book our esteemed artists and speakers. Kathy rolled up her sleeves, loaded her truck and personally delivered the food and wine. Under Kathy’s direction we made our regular yearly donation of $75,000 to LA Opera in addition to another $100,000 secured through fundraising efforts.
Since 1981, the Opera League has provided critical support to LA Opera while engaging our passionate members in social and educational activities that deepen our connection with this unique art form and with the company. Seminars with guest artists, Backstage Magic, Master Classes, and the annual preview are just a sampling of the activities and benefits we’ve enjoyed.
Our hard-toiling volunteers are the throbbing heart and soul of the League. Simply put, we couldn’t do it without them. To wit: During the 2014-15 season, League volunteers tallied up a whopping 22,000 hours. You read that right. 22,000.
If you’ve never volunteered for the League, I encourage you to get involved. There is no better way to meet and mingle with opera lovers with your level of passion. As a bonus, you’ll be intellectually stimulated.
In the meantime, summer’s just getting underway. Fresh off the Independence Day weekend, I’m now getting ready to induct a new batch of Opera League Board members while bidding adieu to the outgoing members, hard to do because they’re all dear friends and longtime associates.
And here’s another summer highlight to look forward to: Issue 40 of BRAVO, the Opera League newsletter, dropping in a mailbox near you the second half of August. You’ll see a more expanded message from me and the usual batch of fascinating pieces about League volunteers and the amazing people at LA Opera who work behind the scenes.
