Clowns. Rustic chivalry. Fatally jealous lovers…
You can see where this is all headed, right?
The Hollywood Bowl!
Mark your calendars, Opera Leaguers: Sunday July 27 is the date we’ll be making our annual trek to this incomparable outdoor amphitheatre for an evening under the constellations while taking in a constellation of sublime music.
Led by Gustavo Dudamel, the LA Philarmonic will be performing a one-two verismo punch: Cavalleria rusticana (Rustic Chivalry, 1890), a one-act opera by Pietro Mascagni; and Pagliacci (Clowns, 1892), a two-act opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo. These two operas kick-started a post-Romantic movement in the late nineteenth century, when artists and storytellers sought to endow their work with naturalism. They are commonly performed together, and that’s how it should be. The story goes that Leoncavallo wrote Pagliacci as a "response" to Cavalleria rusticana. What exactly does that mean? You’ll have to go to the Bowl to find out!
For $65 you'll snag yourself a seat in a section just above the box seats and a pre-concert picnic in a reserved area (with easily accessible restrooms, the same picni area as last year). The spread will include hors d'oevres, salads, sandwiches and yummy dessert, all complimented with wine and water.
The picnic starts at 5pm to give us plenty of time to socialize before the mayhem starts kicking at 7:30pm.
