It’s been said “time flies when you are having fun”. My two years are almost over and then I will join my fourteen predecessors who paved the way, all of whom we honored last year at the Hemmings Award Dinner. This year the Hemmings event will honor Eva and Marc Stern, recognized for their remarkable contributions to LA Opera and the arts in Los Angeles. I hope many of you will again join us for that occasion. Read more about the Hemmings Dinner in this Bravo issue.
The League is a constantly evolving and dynamic organization that is sustained by the commitment of approximately 300 volunteers who are dedicated to enhancing opera in Los Angeles. They are meeting the needs of LA Opera and the community in a myriad of ways, including assisting with student and community education programs, Boutique sales, Artist Services, Seminars, Musicales, Gatherings, Master Classes, Lightwalking, community opera talks, pre-performance speaker introductions, Cast Dinners, opera eblasts, and our newsletter, BRAVO! Our volunteers are the backbone of LA Opera’s needs and assist the company in maintaining its high standard of excellence. To all of you: I have enjoyed working with you. I salute you!
This is a time to reflect on some of the programs and projects that OLLA has accomplished in the past 24 months. Our Opera League Cookbook was created and published. If you’re lucky you may still purchase one while supplies last! We were lucky enough to honor all of our past presidents last year at our Hemmings Dinner. We have financially supported LA Opera’s Education and Community Programs by helping to underwrite a new in-school opera, and have started to revitalize and improve the OLLA website. We are trying to bring younger members into the League by forming a relationship with Aria, LAO’s group for young professionals and by posting upcoming events on their Facebook page. We continue trying to grow our membership and volunteer base, and lastly, we gave our newsletter, BRAVO, a new design and simpler ways to find the events you are looking for.
I look forward to the remaining events this Spring, including Backstage Magic, our Mother’s Day Musicale, one last opera trip to San Diego and another to San Francisco, a final Seminar on Tosca and also a glimpse of Dulce Rosa, LAO’s Off-Grand opera at The Broad Stage. There will be many cast dinners in which to participate, a final Volunteer Appreciation occasion, and our Patron dinner.
I thank the League members for your support, and the volunteers for making so much possible, and lastly, my dedicated Board who gave me unwavering encouragement and a boost when needed. It’s been my pleasure. I hope I have left the League improved and enhanced and look forward to its future. It’s been a great ride!
