Checking in with the President

Hello Opera Leaguers:

By now you should have gotten the new BRAVO with Bill Kennedy's wonderful cover piece on Verismo operas ("Verismania!"). Don't forget we have the PDF version of the newsletter linked on the right rail of the homepage. That article should get you warmed up for our September 6 seminar on LA Opera's season-opening double bill of Pagliacci and Gianni Schicci. If you haven't already, click here to order tickets so you can gain some deep insight from Dr. Nicholas Reveles, head of Education at San Diego Opera.

Whoever said summer was the slow season clearly wasn't an Opera League member. The first week of August saw a gaggle of Leaguers take an epic trip to Santa Fe for a week of opera and culture. If you're already following the Opera League on Facebook, no doubt you've already enjoyed all the photos that members were sending back. If you missed it, click here to view our article and photo gallery that includes photos that didn't make the Facebook cut.

And because we here at the League don't believe in downtime between events, on the day after the Santa Fe crew flew back, we held our annual Hollywood Bowl summer picnic. Russian soprano Venera Gimadieva, the "new voice of Russia," sang the role of Violetta. She dazzled us under the stars in that spectacular venue. If you're already following us on Facebook, I'm sure you loved "Liking" the photos we "live-broadcasted" from the event.

As the 2015-16 is about to kick off, I'm delighted to let you know we've finalized the details on two of our annual marquee events. First, our preview of the upcoming season will take place on Thursday, January 28. Come join us on the top floor of the Chandler for wine, great food, and performances by some of our Young Artists, or YAPs, as we fondly call them.

Our Peter Hemmings Award Dinner, an event near and dear to my heart, will take place on Saturday, April 2. I'm thrilled that we get to honor former L.A. County Supervisor and LA Opera Board member Zev Yaraslovsky. It is no exaggeration to call Zev a super hero, not just for LA Opera but for arts throughout Los Angeles County, for which he’s been instrumental in securing millions of dollars. Improving the Hollywood Bowl shell, the construction of Disney Hall, and the construction of the Valley Performing Arts Center are only three milestones for which he was a key contributor. So come on out and spend a Saturday night helping us honor Zev at the incomparable California Club.

And finally, I'd like to call your attention to the upcoming changes to the membership levels and associated dues. I won't go into it too much here since the letter goes into all the details, but please know the League worked carefully over several months to arrive at these changes. I believe we struck just the right balance between keeping up with the financial times without placing too much of a financial onus on you. The letter is linked on the homepage, or you can click here to read it.

Pagliacci and Gianni Schicchi will make for a thrilling season opener that will no doubt lead to an equally thrilling season. I hope to see you at the September 6 seminar and other League events.

Until next time.
