In Memory of Michael Melton

African Americans for LA Opera (AALAO), a chapter of the Opera League, is thrilled to be back with our first in-person event in over 18 months. Soprano Tiffany Townsend, a member of LA Opera's Young Artist program and a rapidly rising star of the opera firmament, will join us to sing a selection of songs that span time and genre. She will be joined by fellow LAO Young Artist Nicholas Roehler, who will provide the accompaniment.

This event will be held at LA Opera's home venue: Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Fifth Floor Salon, 135 N. Grand Ave., Los Angeles.

IMPORTANT NOTE: To reach the fifth floor salon of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, please use the street-level elevators on Grand Avenue, adjacent to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion Artists Entrance and directly under the stairs that lead up to the Music Center Plaza. About the Artists

          

Tiffany Townsend

Jackson, Mississippi native Tiffany Townsend joined LA Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program in the 2019/20 season and made her LA Opera debut during that unprecedented pandemic season as Léontine in The Anonymous Lover. Her first in-person performance was Ines in the 2021-22 season-opening Il Trovatore. In the spring of 2021, soprano Tiffany performed the role of Katherine in Douglas Pew's Penny with Opera Grand Rapids.

She started the 2019/20 season as Princess Ninette in Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges with Opera Philadelphia. In February 2020, she appeared with Long Beach Opera in the Dream Variation concert. In 2019, she performed Brenda in Rene Orth’s Empty the House, a co-production with the Curtis Opera Theatre and Opera Philadelphia. At Millsaps, she was seen as Lucy Lockit in Benjamin Britten's The Beggar's Opera and performed Fiordiligi in Cosí fan tutte in scenes. At Juilliard she covered the role of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro. She also performed George Crumb’s Winds of Destiny at Alice Tully Hall with the Juilliard Percussion Ensemble. At the Chautauqua Institution, Tiffany performed the First Lady in The Magic Flute. At Curtis she performed lead roles such as the Female Chorus in The Rape of Lucretia, Tatyana in Eugene Onegin, and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. She was a winner of the 2019 New Orleans District of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and then received an Encouragement Award in the 2019 Gulf Coast Regionals.

Tiffany holds a Professional Studies Certificate in Opera from the Curtis Institute of Music, a Master of Music from the Juilliard School and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Millsaps College.


Nicholas Roehler

Pianist and coach Nicholas Roehler joined the Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program for the 2020/21 season. He has performed in Italy, Austria, Germany and the U.S. in venues such as the San Francisco Opera, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Romanischer Saal in Salzburg, Casa Verdi in Milan and the Steinway-Haus in Munich. Recital highlights include the San Francisco Opera Center’s 2020 Schwabacher Debut Recital Series alongside Alice Chung and Laureano Quant as well as “Meet Joe Green” at the Berkshire Opera Festival with artists such as Jonathan Tetelman, Maya Lahyani and Maria Valdes.

Nicholas served as pianist and coach for the world premiere of Jake Heggie’s If I Were You with Merola Opera Program, The Marriage of Figaro with Opera in the Ozarks and University of Michigan Opera, Candide with University of Michigan, Rigoletto with Berkshire Opera Festival and Il tabarro with Bronx Opera. With the Crane Opera Ensemble he served as music staff for Die Fledermaus, Der Schauspieldirektor, L’incoronazione di Poppea, Il signor Bruschino, L’étoile, Suor Angelica, Angélique and many others. He also served as guest coach for the resident artists at Michigan Opera Theatre in Detroit from 2019 to 2020.

Nicholas obtained a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance and piano performance from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and both a Master of Music and a Specialist in Music in vocal coaching and collaborative piano from the University of Michigan under the tutelage of Martin Katz. He is also an alumnus of the Merola Opera Program, the CoOPERAtive Program and SongFest.
