Clothes Make the Man...Even if He's a Woman
Event Start Date: 11/22/2020 1:30 PM
Event End Date: 11/22/2020 3:00 PM
Gender identity recently has risen to the fore as an issue facing contemporary society, challenging previously held conceptions of what it means to be a "man" or a "woman." On the stage, however, gender ambiguity has been with us since the early days of the theatre, where men played all of the parts. In the world of opera, "trouser roles," which initially had been performed by castrati or counter-tenors, eventually became the domain of adult mezzo-sopranos, leading to a new form of gender confusion.
In this talk, Community Educator Ron Streicher will examine the whole range of "gender bending" in opera, including the various ways in which men and women exchange roles — and costumes.
