For centuries, operas have incorporated the vocal arts and instrumental music into staged drama. Toward the end of the 19th century, operettas ("light operas") introduced less formal performances, usually with dialog in the vernacular. During the last half of the 20th century, the Broadway musical became a dominant theatrical artform in America, and many of these shows were adapted from well-known operas. This talk will examine operas that served as the basis for such musicals as Kismet, Miss Saigon and Rent.
