Seminar: Aida - Politics and Religion in Verdi's Operas
Date: Sunday, May 15, 2022
Time: 12:00PM-2:30PM
Location: Thayer Hall, Colburn School
Speaker: Simon Williams
Verdi's deep concern about the interaction of religion and politics culminated with Aida.
In this talk, Simon Williams, UC Santa Barbara Professor Emeritus of Theater and Dance, will trace the development of this theme throughout Verdi's oeuvre. In his deep dive on Aida, he will explore what happens when politics and religion are united. Verdi's values do not lie in any conventional religious or political establishment, but point to a belief in both a humanitarian and mystical realm that lies beyond political power and religious dogma.

Featured Speaker: Simon Williams, UCSB Professor Emeritus of Theater and Dance
