Richard Barrios, author of A Song in the Dark, will discuss the early years of sound in motion pictures, and how the studios brought talent from the stage and opera to take advantage of this new sound fad. Mr. Barrios will specifically focus on attempts to bring operetta to the screen, both in the early sound era (e.g. Desert Song, Vagabond King, Viennese Nights) and in the later golden age of musicals starring the likes of Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald.
Mr. Barrios has published several books on the history of film. His long association with Turner Classic Movies included production of his book, Must-See Musicals: 50 Show Stopping Musicals We Can't Forget. He has managed a film series at the Film Forum in New York and has spoken about and hosted film screenings at the 92nd Street Y, the American Film Institute and the Smithsonian Institute.
